A good Princes’ Islands day starts with a decision: choose one island and give it time. Trying to fit several ferry connections, a hilltop walk and a beach afternoon into the same outing can turn a relaxed escape into a clock-watching exercise. For most first visits, Büyükada offers the clearest introduction; Heybeliada suits travellers who want a smaller island day.
The islands sit in the Sea of Marmara, off Istanbul. Wooden houses, waterfront cafés and sea views remain their appeal. They are residential communities as well as visitor destinations, so keep noise down on side streets and treat private houses as homes rather than attractions with automatic access.
Which Princes’ Island should you choose?
- Büyükada: the largest island, with a historic ferry pier, wooden mansions and a broad choice of waterfront places to eat. Choose it for a first visit with architecture and an optional uphill walk.
- Heybeliada: a useful alternative for a shorter waterfront outing and leafy surroundings. Religious and educational buildings are not necessarily open to casual visitors; check access before making them the purpose of your day.
- Burgazada: a smaller-scale visit centred on the harbour, streets and a meal. Check the return ferry before extending a walk away from the pier.
- Kınalıada: another compact option for a waterfront-focused day. Beach access and facilities vary; do not assume every stretch is a sandy public beach.
There are nine islands in the archipelago, but these four are the main choices for an ordinary day trip. A smaller island is not a guarantee of solitude, especially on sunny weekends.
How to get there: check the ferry, not a fixed journey time
Start with the Istanbul destination guide and choose a departure pier that makes sense for your hotel. Different operators and routes use different mainland piers, intermediate stops and journey times. Check the actual route in both directions rather than relying on an old “one-hour crossing” estimate.
Şehir Hatları’s announcement dated 3 September 2026 states that its winter timetable applies from 7 September 2026 to 27 June 2027. Use the operator’s current timetable and service notices for your date. Summer departures and special-event sailings should not be used to plan an autumn visit.
- Check the departure pier, island stop and operator.
- Choose a return sailing before boarding the outward ferry.
- Allow time for ticketing, boarding queues and getting from your hotel to the pier.
- Keep an earlier return as a fallback if the weather changes.
Wind can affect sea conditions and services. Avoid making the final ferry your only route back when you have a flight, cruise departure or other fixed commitment.
Getting around: walking, bicycles and electric transport
Horse-drawn carriage rides are no longer a current transport option. İETT’s 18 June 2024 explanation records the decision to end carriage transport in January 2020. The islands have electric public transport; “car-free” does not mean there are no moving vehicles.
Consult İETT’s island routes for current services. Walking works well near the piers, while longer routes can involve slopes. Before renting a bicycle, assess the hills, brakes and your confidence sharing streets with pedestrians and electric vehicles. A bicycle is not essential for a satisfying visit.
A realistic slow day on Büyükada
Start with the pier and a short neighbourhood loop
After arrival, explore the historic pier area and nearby streets before choosing a café. Give yourself roughly an hour for an unhurried introductory walk, including photo stops; this is a planning allowance, not a measured guided-tour duration. Keep the loop short if anyone in your party finds slopes difficult.
Make lunch part of the day
Choose a waterfront or side-street restaurant after checking its menu. For fish, establish the price basis and portion before ordering. A shared meal and a sea view can be a better use of a limited day than rushing to another island. See our Turkish drinks guide for ideas beyond a standard soft drink.
Add one longer outing, or keep it simple
If you want to visit Aya Yorgi, first read our Büyükada Hagia Yorgi Church guide, check access and allow for the uphill approach. Do not attach it automatically to a low-effort waterfront itinerary. Alternatively, continue looking at house exteriors and return to the harbour with time to spare.
When to visit and who will enjoy it
Spring and autumn are useful seasons to consider for a walking-focused trip, with fewer reasons to build the day around swimming. Conditions still vary: bring layers for the crossing and check rain and wind forecasts. A weekday may be easier to navigate than a busy weekend, but there is no crowd-free guarantee.
Summer suits travellers interested in beach time, provided they confirm beach-club access, charges and facilities separately. In winter, shorten the outdoor plan and check which cafés are operating. Families and travellers with limited mobility should prioritise a manageable loop, rest stops and the actual boarding arrangements rather than an ambitious island circuit.
Princes’ Islands FAQs
Can I visit several islands in one day?
It is possible with suitable ferry connections, but one island is usually more rewarding for a relaxed first visit. Check the transfers and last return before committing to island hopping.
Is a Princes’ Islands visit the same as a Bosphorus cruise?
No. The islands are in the Sea of Marmara; a Bosphorus outing follows a different waterway and offers a different view of Istanbul.
Should I go independently or join a tour?
Independent travel suits visitors comfortable arranging ferries and their own walking route. Compare the published Istanbul day tours, including the Princes’ Islands option, if you prefer an organised outing. Confirm the island visited, transport and free time for your date.
