İzmir works best when you give the city a day of its own. Walk through Kemeraltı, stop for a pastry, explore the Agora and finish beside the bay. Then choose one trip beyond the centre: ancient Ephesus, a meal in Urla, or the stone streets and coast around Alaçatı.

This İzmir travel guide separates the city from the wider province, so you can choose a base that actually suits your trip. A central waterfront hotel and a beach hotel on the Çeşme Peninsula offer very different holidays.

Is İzmir the right base for your Aegean trip?

  • Choose central İzmir for markets, museums, urban transport and evenings on the waterfront.
  • Choose Çeşme or Alaçatı if beach time and peninsula dining matter more than city sightseeing.
  • Consider Selçuk or Kuşadası if Ephesus is the main reason for your visit.

Two days gives you a useful first look at İzmir. Add separate days for excursions rather than squeezing Ephesus and the Çeşme Peninsula into the same outing. For more archaeological detail, use our Ephesus destination guide; for the peninsula, read the Alaçatı guide.

Day one: Konak, Kemeraltı and the Agora

A manageable morning walk

Start at Konak Square and the Clock Tower, then enter Kemeraltı. Let the market be the main event: browse small shops, pause in a courtyard and leave time for lunch. You will enjoy it more if you resist turning every side street into another appointment.

Allow roughly three hours for the square, market and breaks. This is a planning allowance, not a guided-tour duration. Crowded lanes, uneven paving and summer heat can slow the walk. Travellers with limited mobility should request a shorter route and check individual entrances before setting out.

Keep the Agora as a separate visit

The Agora of Smyrna adds ancient history to a morning spent in a working commercial district. Check the official visitor information before fitting it into your day; ticket arrangements and accessible areas can change. Wear shoes with grip and bring water for exposed sections.

Kadifekale is another historical interest, but it sits above the city. Treat it as an optional separate journey, with transport and current access checked, rather than an automatic extension of the market walk.

Day two: the bay, neighbourhoods and one museum

Use the second day for a slower waterfront route around Kordon and Alsancak, with a museum or gallery if its current programme interests you. Keep the walk short enough to enjoy a seated coffee stop. You do not need to cover the entire bay to get a feel for İzmir.

For a different view, consider Karataş and the historic Asansör area as a separate outing. Check lift operation and your return transport; a viewpoint should not become a long uphill walk by accident. In wet weather, exchange waterfront time for an indoor visit after checking the opening day.

What to eat in İzmir

Start with boyoz, the pastry closely associated with İzmir’s Sephardic heritage, or gevrek, the local sesame ring. A market lunch can be as useful an introduction to the city as a formal restaurant booking. Ask what is seasonal, order a few dishes to share and confirm ingredients if you have allergies or dietary restrictions.

Food can also shape an extra day outside the city. The MICHELIN Guide’s 2026 selection, announced on 4 December 2025, awarded Vino Locale in Urla two stars. That is an award for a restaurant, not evidence that İzmir visitor numbers or bookings are rising. Check the restaurant’s current menu, opening dates and reservation availability before building travel around it.

Use our Urla food and vineyard guide to decide whether that deserves a full excursion. Restaurants and wineries are spread out, so arrange transport before committing to a tasting.

Kuşadası is in neighbouring Aydın province, not central İzmir. Çeşme and Alaçatı are on the peninsula, while Ephesus is near Selçuk. These distinctions matter when comparing accommodation and transfers. Our Pamukkale guide helps with a longer Aegean itinerary.

Transport and where to stay

İzmir Adnan Menderes Airport serves the region. Compare the complete journey to your hotel, including luggage and any interchange. For rail services, use İZBAN’s official information; do not assume that the metro, suburban rail and tram are interchangeable routes.

A central base makes compact sightseeing easier. Before booking, check walking distance to your chosen transport stop, lift access and noise exposure. For a coastal hotel, confirm how you will reach town and whether its restaurant and facilities operate on your dates.

Best time to visit İzmir

Spring and autumn are sensible choices for walking and archaeological visits. The Turkish State Meteorological Service’s İzmir climate record shows much hotter summers and wetter winters. Climate averages are background information, not a forecast for your trip.

In July and August, start outdoor visits early and keep a shaded lunch break. Autumn suits a food and city itinerary, but swimming conditions and coastal businesses vary. Check the forecast and seasonal opening dates instead of assuming summer services continue.

İzmir travel FAQs

Can I see İzmir in one day?

Yes, if you focus on Konak, Kemeraltı and one additional stop. Two days gives you more room for the waterfront and a museum. Excursions need extra time.

Are İzmir’s beaches in the city centre?

The peninsula beaches described in this guide are separate journeys. Choose a coastal base if swimming is your main priority.

Can Travel Agency Turkiye help combine İzmir with other destinations?

Use the site’s Turkey tour programmes to compare existing itineraries, then request a tailored route. Confirm whether İzmir pickup, guiding and your preferred excursion are included in the proposal.
