Istanbul’s Asian side is an easy way to add neighbourhood life, waterfront views and food stops to a first visit. This one-day Kadıköy and Üsküdar itinerary is a flexible self-guided route, not a fixed-price tour: spend the morning around Kadıköy’s market and Moda, then leave the afternoon for Üsküdar’s historic waterfront. It is deliberately different from an Old City sightseeing day.

At a glance: a practical Asian-side day
- Morning: travel to Kadıköy, browse its market streets and choose a leisurely breakfast or coffee.
- Midday: walk toward Moda for independent cafés, shops and a waterside pause.
- Afternoon: make your way to Üsküdar for the fish market, waterfront and historic mosques.
- Evening: enjoy the Bosphorus-facing promenade; return by the service that suits your hotel and the day’s timetable.
Allow a full day if you want both neighbourhoods without racing between stops. Exact ferry routes and departure times vary; check the operator’s current timetable before leaving. A private vehicle can help with mobility or a hotel pickup, but it does not replace the pleasure of a ferry crossing.
Morning in Kadıköy: market streets and local rhythm
Arrive near Kadıköy’s ferry piers and start on foot. The streets behind the waterfront bring together produce sellers, cafés and casual places to eat. There is no single compulsory tasting route: choose one or two stops that fit your interests and dietary needs. For a slower start, see our guide to a traditional Turkish breakfast.
GoTürkiye describes Kadıköy as a lively district with the more bohemian Yeldeğirmeni area north of the port and Moda to the south. This makes it sensible to pick one longer walk rather than trying to cover every street. Yeldeğirmeni suits street-art and café browsing; Moda works well for a relaxed waterfront break. If you have limited time, stay close to the market and Moda rather than adding distant stops.
Midday in Moda: slow the pace
Walk toward Moda, leaving time for lunch and a view of the water. This is a neighbourhood experience rather than a checklist of ticketed attractions. Enjoy a café or restaurant that meets your budget, confirm opening hours directly, and avoid relying on a dated online menu as a current price list. Where hills or walking distance are a concern, shorten the route and arrange local transport.
For travellers who want a food-oriented day, the useful distinction is between a self-guided neighbourhood visit and a privately quoted guided experience. A guided version needs a confirmed licensed guide, food-stop plan, dietary discussion and clarity on which tastings are included. Do not assume those services are included in a general Istanbul day tour.
Afternoon in Üsküdar: markets, mosques and the Bosphorus
Continue to Üsküdar by a suitable local connection. GoTürkiye highlights the Balıkçılar Çarşısı fish-market area near the pier, waterfront views toward the European side, and historic mosques including Mihrimah Sultan and Şemsi Pasha. Choose one or two places to explore respectfully, with worship and visitor arrangements checked on the day. The promenade near the Maiden’s Tower viewpoint is a fitting end to an unhurried day; do not assume the tower itself is open or included.
For more city context, explore our Istanbul destination page. If you are deciding how this day fits your trip, read how many days to spend in Istanbul. If your main interest is the historic peninsula, use our separate Hagia Sophia visitor guide; combining all major Old City monuments with this Asian-side route would be an unnecessarily crowded day.
Getting around and planning responsibly
- Water crossings: compare the current public-ferry timetable and pier names before travel. Weather or service changes can alter a plan; allow a return buffer.
- Walking: the best neighbourhood experience involves time on foot. Ask for a shorter, accessible route if stairs, hills or uneven pavements are a concern.
- Food: tell the venue or guide about allergies and dietary restrictions. Menus, prices and individual businesses may change.
- Private logistics: hotel pickup, vehicle, licensed guiding, tastings and any boat service should be itemised in a tailored quote. None is automatically included in this self-guided article.
Shorten the route to match your day
If food is your main interest
Give Kadıköy market and a seated lunch more time, and keep Moda as an optional walk. Browse before ordering: several small tastes can be more manageable than a large meal followed by a hurried transfer. Check ingredients with each vendor, especially for nuts, dairy, seafood or dietary restrictions. Our Istanbul street-food guide can help you choose what to look for without fixing the day around one restaurant.
If the weather turns or walking becomes tiring
Stay in one district and finish near a convenient return connection. There is no need to reach every waterfront viewpoint to have a satisfying day. Save exposed promenade sections for suitable conditions; wet paving and wind can make a seemingly short walk less comfortable. Arrange the return before your phone battery or energy runs low.
If you want sunset in Üsküdar
Check the local sunset time for your date, then work backwards from the return journey. Autumn and winter daylight leave less time than a summer itinerary suggests. The Maiden’s Tower viewpoint is a waterfront stop; entering the tower would be a separate visit with its own transport, ticket and operating checks.
Asian-side itinerary FAQs
Is this a half-day trip?
For both districts plus Moda and a relaxed meal, reserve a full sightseeing day. With only a half day, choose Kadıköy and Moda or Üsküdar rather than rushing between all three.
Do ferries connect every place directly?
Do not assume that a route operates from the pier you have chosen at the time you need. Check Şehir Hatları’s official timetables and notices for the specific journey, and allow for changes between districts.
Travel planners and group organisers can send the proposed route, passenger numbers and luggage requirements through our Turkey DMC services enquiry page. Any vehicle, guide, timings and inclusions should be confirmed in the written proposal.
Seasonal planning review: 26 October 2026. District information was checked against GoTürkiye and ferry planning against Şehir Hatları; individual departures and restaurant opening require a date-specific check.
Could this become a private Kadıköy–Üsküdar experience?
Yes—as a bespoke request, subject to confirmed guide, transport, itinerary and supplier availability. A workable brief would specify your travel date, group size, hotel, preferred language, food interests, mobility needs and whether you want a public ferry crossing or private transport. Optional extras such as a Bosphorus cruise or evening meal should be priced separately, not implied as inclusions.
Plan My Trip lets you send those preferences for a tailored proposal, or contact the team for an Istanbul quote. Requesting a proposal does not confirm a booking, price or availability.
