Planning a first trip to Turkey can feel ambitious because the country combines historic cities, dramatic landscapes and major archaeological sites across a large area. This practical 10-day Turkey itinerary connects Istanbul, Cappadocia, Ephesus and Pamukkale, leaving room for weather, transport and personal interests.
The route works especially well for travellers who want a balanced introduction to Turkey: Ottoman and Byzantine heritage in Istanbul, Cappadocia’s volcanic landscapes, the ancient city of Ephesus and the travertine terraces of Pamukkale. For a fully arranged journey, compare our Turkey tours and request a private or small-group version of this route.

Days 1–3: discover Istanbul
Day 1 – Arrive and settle into the city
Use the first day for arrival, hotel check-in and a gentle introduction to Istanbul. Depending on your arrival time, walk around Sultanahmet or enjoy a Bosphorus-facing dinner. Avoid scheduling several timed attractions on arrival day; airport transfers and traffic can make the day unpredictable.
Day 2 – Istanbul’s historic peninsula
Dedicate a full day to the historic peninsula. A sensible walking sequence includes the Hippodrome area, the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern, with time for a break between visits. Check the current visitor rules, prayer times and ticket arrangements for each religious or museum site before travelling. Our daily Istanbul tours can be adapted around your hotel location and preferred pace.
Day 3 – Bosphorus and contemporary Istanbul
Spend the third day combining the Bosphorus with a neighbourhood experience. Options include a public ferry, a guided Bosphorus cruise, the Spice Market, Galata or the Asian-side districts. A private guide is useful if you want to connect the city’s Ottoman, Byzantine and modern stories rather than simply move between viewpoints.
Days 4–6: Cappadocia’s landscapes and heritage
Day 4 – Travel to Cappadocia
Flight schedules and airport choices vary by date, so confirm the actual route, baggage conditions and transfer before booking. With a suitable later flight, a short Istanbul sightseeing morning can still fit before the journey; leave time to collect luggage, reach the correct departure airport and check in. Compare Nevşehir Cappadocia (NAV) and Kayseri (ASR) arrivals against your hotel transfer. For an airport-by-airport checklist, read the Istanbul-to-Cappadocia flight planning guide on Turkey Trip Advisor. Cappadocia is a region rather than a single town; Göreme, Uçhisar and Avanos are common sightseeing bases.
Day 5 – Göreme and the central valleys
Explore Göreme and the nearby valleys with a licensed local guide or a carefully planned walking route. The region is known for its distinctive volcanic formations, rock-cut churches and historic settlements. The GoTürkiye Cappadocia guide and UNESCO’s information on the Göreme National Park and the Rock Sites of Cappadocia are useful references for understanding the landscape and heritage.
Day 6 – Choose your Cappadocia experience
Use the second full day for a wider regional circuit, a slower village-and-valley day or a sunrise balloon flight if operating conditions allow. Balloon flights are weather-dependent and should never be treated as guaranteed; keep a flexible morning in your schedule and confirm the operator’s current safety and cancellation terms. See our daily Cappadocia tours for route ideas.
Days 7–8: Ephesus and the Aegean coast
Day 7 – Continue to Selçuk or Kuşadası
Plan the next intercity connection carefully. Depending on your transport choices, you may travel by domestic flight and road transfer or use a longer overland connection. Selçuk is convenient for Ephesus and nearby heritage sites; Kuşadası works well if you prefer a coastal base or are arriving on a cruise-related itinerary. For the next leg, compare an Ephesus to Pamukkale day trip with an overnight stay.
Day 8 – Visit Ephesus
Start early for Ephesus, where the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, Curetes Street and the ancient urban layout reward a guided visit. Ephesus is a UNESCO World Heritage property; its official description explains the site’s successive settlements and major Roman monuments. Read the UNESCO Ephesus entry and the GoTürkiye Ephesus guide before you go.
Wear supportive shoes, carry water and protect yourself from the sun. Entry products, opening hours, conservation closures and any special-area access can change, so check the official Turkish Museums information close to your travel date rather than relying on an old price list.
Day 9: Pamukkale and Hierapolis
Pamukkale is best understood as a combined natural and archaeological destination. The white travertine terraces are part of the same UNESCO World Heritage property as the ancient city of Hierapolis. Walk only in areas permitted by site management, follow conservation signs and allow time for the theatre, necropolis and other remains beyond the terraces. Consult the UNESCO Hierapolis-Pamukkale page for the heritage context.
Because Pamukkale adds a substantial road segment to this itinerary, consider staying nearby or treating it as a planned stop between the Aegean region and your departure connection. Do not book a tight same-day international departure without a generous, realistic transfer buffer.
Day 10: depart or add an extra night
Your departure plan depends on the final overnight location and flight schedule. If your international flight leaves Istanbul, build in time for the domestic connection or return journey from the Aegean region. An extra night in Istanbul is often the calmer choice when the itinerary includes several domestic movements.
How to make this itinerary work smoothly
- Protect the key visits: keep Istanbul and Cappadocia flexible enough to absorb arrival delays or weather changes.
- Use realistic travel days: Turkey is large, and a route that looks short on a map may involve airports, transfers and traffic.
- Book by season: spring and autumn are often comfortable for cultural sightseeing, while summer can be hot at exposed archaeological sites; confirm conditions for your exact dates.
- Choose private or small-group travel intentionally: private transport gives more control over stops, while a small group can be efficient for standard sightseeing.
- Verify current rules: attraction hours, admission systems, flight schedules and balloon operations can change. Check official sources shortly before departure.
Make ten days feel less rushed
Work backwards from your international departure and count actual hotel nights, not just calendar dates. Keep the arrival day light and avoid adding an extra city unless you are willing to shorten another stay. If a full sightseeing day precedes a domestic flight, compare evening departures after 17:00 and verify the actual schedule, transfer and check-in requirements.
Build in food and local time
Leave a lunch or market stop in Istanbul and a relaxed meal in the Aegean rather than scheduling every hour. See our Istanbul street-food guide and Aegean food guide; tell restaurants about allergies and dietary needs.
Adapt to the season
Spring and autumn can suit outdoor sightseeing, but rain, heat and shorter daylight still affect a route. Pack layers for early Cappadocia mornings, plan water and shade at Ephesus, and retain an indoor or flexible alternative if conditions change.
What should groups confirm?
Discuss room configuration, luggage, guide language, meal needs and vehicle access with the organiser before requesting a written proposal. Travel agencies can use our Turkey DMC services page. Flights, hotel rooms and guiding remain subject to confirmation.
Planning review: 27 October 2026. Recheck operating hours, airline schedules and supplier terms for the actual travel dates.
Can this route be customised?
Yes. Travellers who prefer a slower pace can remove Pamukkale and add a second night in Istanbul or Cappadocia. Beach-focused travellers can extend the Aegean or Mediterranean coast, while faith and heritage travellers may add the House of the Virgin Mary, the Seven Churches of Revelation or other religious sites. Browse our Turkey package tours or use the Plan My Trip page to request a tailored program with hotels, transfers, guides and domestic flights.
